As a participant, you will learn personal protection strategies, how to safegaurd your own property against theft and how to help protect your neighbors and coworkers. You'll know how to be a good witness and contact the police when you observe suspicious activities.
Knowledge is Power The Crime Prevention Unit of the WSU Police Department has workshops and literature to educate you about crime dangers. With this knowledge, you can take proactive steps to help reduce crime in our campus community. Some of the Crime Prevention programs available include:
The Crime Prevention Unit also helps the WSU community prevent crime opportunities through Operation Identification, which enables you to engrave valuables with your drivers license ot other identifying number. Engravers are available at the police department, and an inventory sheet is provided for you to complete. With your help, we will increase public awareness, improve security and reduce the market for stolen property.
The most effective crime-prevention device ever invented is the telephone- use it! Call the WSU Police Department at 626-6460 to report criminal or suspicious activity. If it's an emergency, such as a crime in progress, dial 911. You can remain anonymous if you wish to do so. If you don't have a cell phone, emergency phones are positioned throughout the campus next to buildings and in parking lots. The phones ring directly to the WSU Police Department.
When your calling, try to:
Protect Yourself with Common Sence It takes only eight seconds for a thief to enter your room and leave with your valuables! More than 90 percent of room and office thefts involve occupants who were "just gone for a few moments". Close and lock your door every time you leave. Do: Leave a key with a trusted friend instead of attempting to hide it outside. When away for an extended time, have a neighbor watch your room. Lock up your valuables and be sure they can't bee seen fromn outside. Keep doors and windows locked, especially at night. Most prowlers come through unlocked doors and windows. Keep a cell phone with you and accessible at all times. Have 911 on speed dial. Don't Prop doors open. Leave notices indicating that you are away. Give personal information by telephone to a stranger. Leave your shades drawn when going out during the day; it's a clue no one is home Open your door to unknown callers or admit a stranger when entering your residence hall or locked university building.
